Lighting Preferences

  • Hello:
I am interested in finding out what type of lighting is most commonly used in Germany. For 400 watt HQI, are the kelvins most commonly used the 10,000K, 14,000K or 20,000K?

I currently am running 2 x 400watt HQI 14,000K Ushio with 2 x 54watt T5 (22,000K - Aqua Perfekt). I found this interesting article published by Dana Riddle on how blue light spectrum may provide better growth, in contrast to the thinking that lower Kelvins provide better growth.

    Thanks!

Sorry for the English post - I don't speak or write German!!

  • Hi Kevin

    Thanks for your post

We know here in Germany due to long experiences and many tests that to much blue light will not increase the
coralgrow it will only increase the flourescent coloration.

The light colors of 10 - or 14.ooo K are the best mix for grow and view

  • Hallo Claude:

Thank you for your response! This information makes a lot of sense. As I mentioned, I am currently running 2 x 400watt BLV HQI bulbs with 2 Aqua Science T5s. Originally I ran 2 x 400 watt BLVs on their own and I noticed that the tank had more of a yellow appearance. I then added the 2 T5s which helped bring out more of the blue and minimize the yellow. I was considering adding another 2 T5s - do you think that would make the tank too blue? How many T5s would you run with the 2 400watt BLVs (14K).

Many thanks again for your help!

    Kevin

  • Hi

the BLV 14.000 is not so blue like other US-products so i choose normaly 4 or 6 T5
together with the BLV as sample AS Blue AS BLUE AS SPECIAL BLV 14.000K AS SPECIAL AS BLUE AS BLUE

This light is slightly/Medium blue but not to strong
I like more the 10.000 K bulbs with the same T5

  • hi, kevin,

to be honest, this is a common discussion here as well.

my personal opinion, after reading a lot of threads like this: its only the personal tast, which makes the difference

and if you prefer a special type of lighting or light colour, believe me, your corals will grow better :grinning_squinting_face:

  • @ Claude: The steps that you recommended is exactly what I was thinking of doing. I was also considering the Aqua Connect 14K Plus bulb but when I saw a few of them, they were running on the pink side. Thanks again for the recommendations.

@ MBB: In Canada, a lot of hobbyists seem to be running 20K metal halides without T5s or supplemental lighting. From my experiences, I found that with 20K it seems too blue for my tastes, but it does vary from bulb to bulb. Thanks for your helpful comments. BTW, I checked out your website and saw some of your photos. Just wondering what kind of bulbs you are using.

    Thanks again everyone!

    hi,

presently i am using giesemann 250w/10000k, but the blv nepturion 10000k i used before for my taste at least made a better, brighter light.

more than 10000k is not possible for me, as the for our eyes visible light decreases with increasing kelvin.
i have only about 1w/g, so a higher k-amount would make it look too dark.
